Breast Health Getting regular checkups and performing breast self-exams are two important ways to keep your breasts healthy. |
Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women (other than skin cancer). This short assessment will help you determine if you have major risk factors for breast cancer. |
Early detection is one of the most important factors in saving lives. While the chance of a woman having breast cancer during her lifetime is one in eight, the chance of dying from breast cancer is only one in 35. If cancer is found before it spreads, it’s much easier to treat.
Who Should Have a Mammogram?
The American Cancer Society recommends that all women have a baseline screening mammogram between the ages of 35 and 40, and beginning at age 40, women should have an annual screening mammogram.
What is a Mammogram?
A mammogram is an x-ray of the breasts, used to detect and diagnose breast diseases. Mammograms play a central part in the early detection of breast cancer because they can detect changes in the breast that may be early signs of cancer, but are too small or subtle to be felt.
The Breast Imaging Center for Women
Cleveland Regional Medical Center's breast imaging center is committed to the fight against breast cancer and is certified by the American College of Radiology. We provide privacy and peaceful surroundings staffed by trained, skilled and qualified technologists and radiologists. Our technologists are certified and registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
Our center offers both screening and diagnostic mammography along with needle localization prior to surgery. A screening mammogram is performed annually and a diagnostic mammogram is performed when there is a questionable problem or concern. Some reasons for doing a diagnostic study include Fibrocystic Breast Disease, a mass or lump, swelling or discharge.
The Breast Imaging Center for Women also offers educational videos and pamphlets for breast self-exam.
